Twitter plus politics seems to get people very excited. So the number of people who are hashtagging WeLovetheNHS is in the news. Sarah Brown is in on the Twitter tag, Downing Street has just sent out an email about it, Cameron did the same yesterday.
Viral! Some say it even crashed the Twitter system. It didn’t. How many people have used the #welovethenhs hash tag exactly? In three days 11,902 people have Tweeted it a total of 22,642 times at the time of writing. By comparison 69,991 people have signed the petition on the Downing Street website calling on Gordon Brown to resign and some 2.5 million people watched Dan Hannan dissect Gordon Brown to his face live on YouTube. Guido knows internet viral storms when he sees them. This ain’t one.
11,902 people is less than the number of people who come to this blog site on a day in Silly Season when Guido hasn’t even posted an article. Get a grip you twits…
UPDATE : If Sarah and Gordon love the NHS so much, why did she urge him to spend thousands of pounds having his teeth done privately? They don’t love the NHS enough to wait for it to fix his teeth. Hypocrite.

The pre-WW2 county hospitals were a byword for corruption and incompetance. The management overheads may have been lower but more funds often went out of the back door on corrupt catering and maintenance contracts than was spent on nurses and doctors, let alone drugs and equipment.

One of the perks of senior civil service posts is private health care. My dad (formerly civil servant with the FO) has it, and uses it. He wouldn’t touch the NHS. It’s “for dogs”.

Recently ended up waiting 6 months for NHS dental treatment, as I wanted to know how bad things had got in the NHS. Dentist insisted on knowing how much I smoked in detail, and insinuated it was the cause of all my problems. (I thought better of asking her if she considered smoking caused climate change). I had to placate her with the lie that I was in the process of quitting otherwise I expected to get the bum’s rush. No wonder McUckoo went private: if you pay the piper you can tell her to shut it if you don’t like the tune.
Intimidatory rubbish – like my previous dentist used to blame all my problems on snacking and sugary drinks (like Southern Comfort and black coffee I asked?). The next one no doubt will blame it all on my not having rushed to get a swine flu vaccination.

My daughter has just done some “work experience” in a NHS hospital. Day one she came home and asked “Do you know what nurses do all day?” – The answer “Smoke, sit around gossiping and pretending to do paper work”.

Not typical I think NM – my daughter is a nurse who looks after seriously ill children following major brain surgery. Her ward has been short-staffed ever since she started there and no hope of additional staff. She often works a 12-14 hour shift with no proper breaks if the place is more than half full. She’s not paid for being at home on call, when she cannot drink and can’t be more than 30 mins from the hospital – and there’s no pay for this if she’s not called in. So it isn’t exactly a bed of roses. Problem is – money is short because there are so many managers and on pay scales that far exceed hers. I wonder who is the more vauable? Hmmm, difficult one that……

I wonder if it is wise to reduce critical services at Hospitals such as Chase Farm in Enfield and St. Marys of Sidcup at a time that the Capital faces the swine flu epidemic that is due to increase in the Autumn.
Chase Farm faces the prospect of losing it’s Major A&E department with one of the fastest response times in the country , very useful as they are located to one of the busiest stretches of the motorway system.
The Stroke trauma centre is to be relocated miles away and at the time of a Baby Boom in London right now they are to reduce the maternity facilities, not very sensible is it?

I used to attend a diabetic clinic routinely every 3 months and for the first few visits made sure that I arrived 5 minutes before the appointed time. Just as routinely I would have to wait 2 hours before seeing the consultant . I got fed up up with this pantomime and one day told him that the organisation was pathetic. He told me that I should be grateful for the free service.
My response was that if I had known the service was free I would not have bothered paying all of those years into the national insurane contribution scheme . I then made an observation about the huge number of staff walking up amnd down the corridors doing nothing but moving bunches of manilla folders from one office to another.
He then told me that stroppy patients could be removed by hospital security
so I shut up but declined to attend in future .
Since then I bought a blood pressure monitor,blood sugar meter and devised
an eating plan ignoring the useless advice of the dieticians (mostly young kids
equipped with degrees in nutrition ) who recommend 3 egg sized ,egg shaped potatoes— as a treat.
My blood sugar levels for the last 3 years very seldom stray outside normal
range and my GP tells me that my blood pressure would be good in a man 20 years younger. Exercise bores me so I give it a swerve .
My point is that a lot of the so called front line srvices are a waste of cash .
Agreed. I went to the hospital last year with kidney stones. I arrived at A&E at 4.30am and was (eventually) discharged at 2.30pm. I waited on a trolley in A&E for hours, even though staff there seemed to be doing very little. There were no more than 3 patients in A&E with me at the time. They admitted me to a side-room when they realised I hadn’t had an x-ray at 1.00pm. They then came into my room with a prescription for painkillers and told me I could go home at 2.30.
I do wonder what I’ve paid into for all these years when I could have treated myself and saved a lot of time and aggravation.
there’s a moral to the story… My wife has been a diabetic (type 1) for 40 years. Very few problems with her health. She checks her blood sugar at least three times a day and adjusts the insulin dose as necessary.

Your post suggests that you probably didn’t need to see the diabetologist in the first place. What you needed was some guidance on managing your condtion.
But self management doesn’t get the diabetologist additional sessions for OP clinics at 10% of their £74 to £176K salary. Many consultants do 12 isessions a week. ie an extra two and can easily earn £200k per annum.
This is why some of the diabetologists have ignored the self management guidance in the Diabetes NSF as it effectively diminshes their role, and income.
They’re on a make-work scheme. The b**tards are much worse than the MPs. and there are many more of them, about 32,000 at the last count.

The NHS has become an almost unmanageable behemoth. Almost everyone I know who has to use it’s services has stories of being badly treated in some way. All my experiences of the NHS are poor, with a few honourable exceptions. The last person to be considered in most circumstances is the patient.
There are some things that the NHS does very well. If you are seriously injured in an accident, there is nobody you would rather see hoving into view than an NHS paramedic.
For more routine illnesses and conditions, the NHS is generally a nightmare. Standards of clinical care – when you finally get to see a clinician – are usually good (though not always). The disorganisation in getting there, and the way in which patients are treated like a nuisance, is truly staggering.
I changed recently from NHS dentistry to private, because my dentist refused to have anything more to do with the nightmare of the NHS. Standards of care have improved vastly, and the costs, whilst not trivial, are reasonable.
The NHS has little competition, and in consequence, little incentive to do better, or offer better service. The only way it will improve is if we demand improvement. The blind worship by the left ensures that it’s failings will be perpetuated.
We took our toddler in for an operation a while ago (that had already been booked/set), we arrived, he put on his hospital pyjamas, had the anaesthetic cream rubbed on the back of his hand for his general anaesthetic drip, and after his hand was numb and he was about to be wheeled in for his general to be administered, the hospital manager got a poor nurse to do his dirty work of having to say to everyone on the ward “sorry, we’ve run out of doctors, and we’ve also got no power in the surgery theatre; you’ll have to go home and try again some other time.”
It only happened to us once.
But it had already happened 3 times to someone else on the ward.
The nurses were great/nice. The managers are fucking hopeless because they get paid (as does the hospital) regardless of how badly it’s run.
So, yes, competition of one sort or another is key.
We drove during the worst snow/ice we’ve had for fuck knows how many years in februrary to maternity when my wife was in labour; contractions 5 minutes apart and they ordered us to get back in our car and go home and come back later because they didn’t have any spare beds.
I told them they’d have to get their security to physically kick my wife out of the building if they wanted us to leave and that I’d call the police on them if they tried it.
Luckily they finally saw sense and allowed us to stay.
Same thing happened with our first kid too (apart from the snow)
If they did that in a private hospital they’d be up to their eyeballs in lawsuits and out of business within a month.
Most of the people who work on the ground in the NHS (ie the doctors/nurses) do a great job given their situation, and have sincere commitment to help people.
The problem is that they’re organised, managed, funded, and dictated-to by people who are incompetent sociopaths with no understanding of how to do/manage anything.
I feel sorry for the staff on the ground; it must be very frustrating having to watch someone die through lack of an oxygen mask because your manager/employer pissed all the money away on 10million reams of pointless forms and a new I.T. system that never ends up being usable.
