One obvious solution would be for readers to pay credit into a PayPal-like account, and for each article request the provider would, with the reader’s approval, extract a “micropayment” of say 1p from this account. (A reader could use the same account for multiple news & blog providers.) It wouldn’t be hard to make the system secure with suitable encryption and cookies etc.

If the providers sent the company managing the accounts keyword summaries of each article requested, the company could accumulate detailed information on their customers interests, and might forgo taking payment if the reader clicked on targetted ads.
