1766 Contessa No, and a thousand times No! Nationalisation was the beginning of the end of the Railway-system: from Nationalisation, through Beeching, to 'train-operating companies' and 'Railtrack', it has been a story of steady decline. We were in Brighton when the de-regulation of buses first came in, and it was amazing: there were more frequent buses, and lower fares: it reminded me of my home, where two brothers had put their gratuities into running buses ('the Blue buses'), which somehow survived despite 'Western National' and actually kept 'Western National' on its toes for the particular route they served. Nationalisation certainly spelled the ruin of our local Gas-company, which no longer had the need to satisfy its customers and, of course, when 'North Sea Gas' came along, the gas-works closed, whereas a private Gas Company might have continued to offer an alternative source of gas to North Sea, AND kept our coal-mines in production. Is 'Transco', or whatever it is going to extend its pipework to places like the gas-less village I now live in? No! No more than Network Rail, or whatever it's called, is going to bring back the branch-lines killed off by Beeching, and re-instate the goods-system that made it economical, convenient, and environmentally-friendly to move milk, grain, fish, cattle, sheep, flowers from where they were produced to where they were needed. What does 'State ownership' mean? It means centralisation, bureaucracy, captive-markets, interference by politicians in matters where their ignorance is total. Has any 'Nationalised' industry ever produced a profit, or a dividend? No! The reverse: loss-making is somehow thought to be not just what happens, but seen as somehow virtuous, keeping non-jobs going in outmoded industries seen as 'the right thing to do'.
The Great Western Railway was not 'badly run' - 'British Rail' was, and so was 'British Gas'. Just imagine, Contessa, if you had only a 'British Hairdresser' to go to, could only get a phone from The G.P.O., etc., etc.!
