Surely you can trade on the place -

      LOL, can be either.

    Scorched Earth says:

    And so it begins..

Changing the Electoral System to alternative vote plus and making the House of Lords totally Elected.

The Big Reforms package Brown and Mandy were dreaming up starts to hove into view exactly as predicted.

Sadly for them it’s probably too late as the plotters are coming for Brown in the autumn. Brown’s a dead man walking.

I presume all the Hardgetwattery is going to be moderated.
Looked like a kids site with all that wankery.

    • 15
      Dr Nuts says:

Wish Brown was a dead man – just hadn’t stopped breathing yet!

      Look at Mandy’s New “Empire”.
Not bad for an ethically challenged operator who isn’t even an MP.
      http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1191898/Brown-pledges-rebuild-Britains-democracy-signals-end-past-post-polls.html

But Brown is reforming our “democracy” ?

      Be afraid.

        the Pro from Dover says:

We’ll soon be back into the good old days of ‘the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister’, this time for Lord Mandy.
Remember when Prescott was gifted every department under the sun to keep him important and necessary, and fired off meaningless initiatives in all directions.

Maybe this will be a good thing and distract the good Lord from his most dangerous role, protecting the Dear Leader’s ass.

        • 62
          Steve the Hammer says:

oh dear..knowing Mandy’s inclinations, he is more likely to covet his ass (infringing the relevant commandment)

        • 66
          Shithead says:

I’m fed up with telling you all this, but Two Bogs Fat Arse was a kitchen utensil cleaner on the boats. His uniform was oilskins, to protect him from all the crap. Saying he was promoted beyond his competence is like calling the Atlantic wet.

      • 65
        fedupwithbrown says:

        It’s not Brown. It’s Mandy. He’s on a promise.
Wants the EU Presidents’s job. Got to get the Lisbon treaty through though.
Let’s hope the Irish tell them to get stuffed again.

  7. 9
    Dr Nuts says:

I assume we can debate an issue of importance:

Proportional Representation – as wanted by the lib-dems and Nu Labs…

Here’s the figures from the Euro elections … and seat allocations. Proportional it is not!

    4,200,000 – 26 seats
    2,300,000 – 13 seats
    2,100,000 – 11 seats
    1,300,000 – 2 seats

Labour looked at the results and realised how to maximise their seat share for votes! Wipe-out is not going to happen!

    • 16
      Scorched Earth says:

It isn’t exactly PR. It’s some strange hybrid of PR dreamed up for the Euros.

And that’s the point where Brown and Mandy’s plan falls to pieces.

Because there are so many variations on PR you can’t just dictate one to put forward for the ballot on the yes/no referendum without consultation.

He has to get the LibDems on Board and they don’t like Labours own preferred system. Though it has to be said there already is a form PR in Wales and Scotland and the Tories are fine with that.

So that might well the compromise that goes forward.
UKIP could also decide to go big on this and support it too.

    • 32
      Dr Nuts says:

What makes anyone think this will get a referendum?

Brown bottled the General Election when it was almost a certainty he’d win!

      • 47
        Scorched Earth says:

Because Brown still has an easily workable majority and can still Legislate.

There’s also been no rumblings of rebellion on this yet like there clearly has on P.O. Privatisation. (which will probably get kicked into the long grass now)

We certainly don’t need to like it but a Referendum is not some impossible dream as the procedures to do it are well known and his backbenches will ram it through if they think there’s even a tiny chance it’ll help them save their seats.

If he wants it he has to move sharpish though as it still needs a month or two for the Campaign.

But he does seem to be doing exactly that and made it Reform number 1 on his list. It was the first Big thing he announced after the Euro disaster.

  8. 13
    Fells Point barfly says:

Yeah, saw Jeremy on tonight, asking some awkward questions about having enough time left, with the Unite head guy saying it meant nothing to “normal” people. They were worried about hospitals and mortgages.
    Probably true.

    • 22
      Scorched Earth says:

It does mean very little to the man in the street.
So there won’t be the upswell of outrage Cameron thinks there will be.

The whole point of putting it to a Referendum would be not just to give the public a chance to decide but it’s a calculated tactic by Mandy to put pressure on Cameron to pledge a Referendum on Lisbon in his manifesto as many Tories still want to see that very badly.

After all if Brown can have a Referendum on this why can’t Cameron just pledge one for Lisbon ? goes the thinking.

Brown will be nowhere near the campaign for a PR Referendum, nor will Mandy.

Think it was a coincidence this news comes out after the first Cabinet meeting with Johnson as Home Secretary ?

If the LibDems can be persuaded they will put forward Cable or maybe even Kennedy to spearhead the “for” Campaign. Add Farage to the mix and the other small Parties and that might be what we see in the “for” camp.

Who will Cameron use as his point man for the “no” team ? Hague ? Clarke ?

No doubt Mandy will soon be spinning that Cameron was happy to use PR at the Euros where Labour still got an almighty kicking.

As for Lords Reform. Could be pie in the sky.
They would have to Parliament Act it all the way through.
Doesn’t mean they won’t of course.

    • 33
      Dr Nuts says:

      That’ll backfire – 1 80% of people want a referendum on Lisbon
2 I don’t think we’ll get a referendum on this – simply because we didn’t on the Lisbon Treaty, and Brown bottled the General Election – doesn’t everything come in threes?

      • 46
        Scorched Earth says:

1 So ? You appear to be confusing Brown with someone who gives a shit ? His backbenchs don’t really care much about Lisbon. Cameron’s most certainly do.

2 See 1 And Brown has to be seen to actually DO stuff now. Johnson’s in the Cabinet so if he bottles out if this he definitely gets knifed in the autumn. Amusingly he’ll still most likely get knifed in the autumn anyway but that is some of the thinking behind doing this and there’s the other obvious reason.
        Grand distraction. Very old tactic.

          Don’t forget Purnell!

This odious little scumbag took £100 a week – just for food
While the disabled were attacked as lazy and are having their DLA deliberately cut – for political reasons and to the extent the RNIB has had to step in for the Blind to prevent this policy hurting its membership.

The Disabled, and crippled can only dream of £100 a week in food – let alone the Incapacitated, and the jobseekers! (As for the carers – doing 24/7 jobs – I know I am one – who else here works 5am to 3am 7 days a week ‘cos their charge doesn’t sleep due to mania?) I £44 a week! for an exhausting job. Noting also that the carers support network has been deliberately underfunded and subsequently cut from services.

James Purnell – it’s good for him to trough/claim benefits while on a cabinet ministers salary, but God help if anyone else tries it! Indeed benefits are deliberately cut!

What a pointless blog post from Guido. Running out of ideas mate?

If you want some real political discussion, why not check out Labourtlist or read some of Michael White’s articles. Although they might be a bit too highbrow for most of you, better bring a dictionary.

    • 21
      Samee says:

It’s not Guido who’s running out of ideas is it? It’s quite clear that Guido has been taking part in a very important aspect of life – spending time with his family. The biggest problem with politicians these days is that they don’t have any understanding of the real world that the rest of us live in. Can I politely suggest you go and get lost in the political wilderness along with the rest of your Hoonarable colleagues?

      • 34
        Dr Nuts says:

Hate to point it out – if ZaNu Labour get PR through parliament – they wont ever meet political wilderness – which is why they’re pulling this one now. It’s PR or annihilation!

    • 24

(Whether or not you think your blog is a public service, Guido, it is. Thank you for it.)

    caesars wife says:

I keep wondering that if the light bulb has gone “on” in pollys head , why the PLp hadnt thought it had gone “on” in other peoples heads , the election results would confirm , dont want labour to run the country .

The cabinet smiles , all new platform of electoral reform to deliver unto the broken and scared people of the UK , ladies and gentlemen I present gordon the reformer (I still think its robots in disguise) , but let us give the new a brief rundown

1 it will waste parlimentary time
2 it will cost millions to get a referendum
3 it is unproven to offer any better or less corupt form of governement
4 it can weaken goverments effectiveness and enpower nutcase parties
5 it makes opposition less rigourous

so there we have it the policy of deeply unpopular knaves/liars , with nothing else beter to do .

surprised no one has asked why douglas alexander hasnt been sacked , still if the chancellor can blow billions in banking collapse , whats a complete sweep of county councils by comparison, but hey its only someone elses money !!

lets see what the brownster has to offer , hes going to hit the ground running , so lets see if hes in the fat burn zone , or just in the burn him zone .

hell hath no fury like a woman not worshipped correctly , or for that matter lord voltamore .

see if PMQs starts being answered correctly , amongst the cult of the ruiners followers , has the chancellor changed his growth forcasts in the light of the C&G branch closures , when will the 2bn from loyds be in the governments account , when will the next payment be , when will the rock be available for sale, how reliable are the treasury forcasts.Has geoff hoon and shaun woodward been in the star chamber yet , why bother with the iraq inquiry and its cost when it will not adress the key lib dem issue , can charlie falconer be called to explain his first doubts .

The stasi will no doubt increase under mr johnson , the smearing NGO could be all the rage soon .Still looks a weak cabinet and gordon is no longer running the show .

caesars wife smells the change and will post under the “The chronicles of the runiner” from time to time .

hope you and mrs fawkes had a good day out Guido

They know they are going to be slaughtered in the GE. They are clearly positioning themselves for an opposition of maximum employment for the troughers.

It is nothing more clever than, or less cynical than, an attempt to convince the current useless corrupt thieving Labour shower that, with Mandy and McEnglishHater, they have a chance of continuing to steal our money for doing bugger all of any value.

I have resisted thoughts of uprising but I am just getting more ****ing angry at this.

4 unlike this nutcase party & the other weak governments we’ve had ?
5 where have you been for the past decade or so ? blair had everything his own way and lets not forget thatcher also had it incredibly easy too.

“McEnglishHater! ?? this would be the same moron who was thrashed in scotland and told to fuck off by the electorate there only a few days ago ?
        how quickly they forget.

      the Pro from Dover says:

Now is not the time for good men and women to do nothing.

This electoral reform is going to be gerry-mandelsoned to provide public purse funding for the political parties (on the Champions League format, once you are big, you get more money) and to rig seat allocation on a party-apparatchik basis (party list MPs not individual people).
We want more independent thinkers, we don’t want more Head Office control.

We want rolling MP elections, 20%/25% every year, the balance of power should be continually adjusting to suit the mood of the country.
What is the point of a landslide in 2005, when by 2009 it is clear to all that the Government is out of step with the people.
If you split the country into regions, and each constituency in the region voted at the same time, you could make it relevant and focused.

A general election is just a media circus, it isn’t ‘democracy in action’
Fixed-term parliaments are also crippling, this arrangement would sort that out er, -at a stroke!
