I have already seen the said interview on Sky. The point I’m trying to make is not that Kirkbride is clean (I have little or no interest in her to be honest), but that there are worst cases being ignored while she is taking the heat – in particular Cabinet Ministers.
Mark Anthony France is a Respect party secretary for Bromsgrove, yet is standing as an Independent in the council elections and has been nominated by a number of others who are officers of the ‘Julie must go’ petition.
Respect are perfectly entitled to start a petition – but to conceal their party allegiance while so doing is deceptive. I believe that a number of their policies repel a lot of ordinary people and this campaign would not have been so successful if people understood their involvement.

I’m not decrying the ordinary people who have signed this and are genuinely upset by the whole expenses scandal. I share the same anger myself. I also believe this has gone beyond the point of no return and she will have to go. However, this is not purely a grassroots campaign.
At the moment people are very angry and we risk throwing the baby out with the bath water. I bet that in every constituency at the moment you could set up a stall in the market square and secure a whole load of signatures. If that stall was overtly sponsored and manned by a particular party, let alone a fringe or extreme one like Respect, many people would not sign.
I am guessing that many people in Bromsgrove would not sign if they realised that many of the movers behind the petition were associated with Respect. I have not found anything on their Facebook campaign page to disclose the relationship of some individuals with Respect. That is why I am a bit cynical about this when there are a lot of bigger crooks keeping their heads down.

When VAT rises to 20 per cent and basic rate of income tax to 50 per cent, to pay off Gordon’s insane borrowing, I think things will become very dangerous for MPs and any other public servant found to be augmenting their perfectly adequate salary with thousands of pounds of tax-free extras paid for from the public purse.

Amongst the fall-out from Sleazegate will be the emergence of a growing realisation that the Palace of Westminster can no longer be the appropriate home of parliament – my assertion.
The restoration of a sense of dignity for parliament must be the top priority for the next government – otherwise they will simply be unable to govern. Until a move is made to new, modern premises, the public will rightly be suspicious that any people that gather together in a ‘palace’ are unlikely to be wholly on their side.
The Palace of Westminster is an impressive, undeniably iconic building. I can’t honestly say, though, that I have ever personally viewed it as beautiful (though many do) , but I wish it no harm. Every time I see the building on TV, however, I am impressed by how my reaction to it has become one of mistrust and alienation. I don’t think I will ever again associate it with ‘democracy’ and I believe that will be a common perception.
Because the Commons debating chamber is arranged as it is – opposing benches – it has been argued before that this structure imposes an adversarial sense unconducive to the multi-party representations common in modern democracies.
This is the time when considerable change is due for our democracy and government. Unless the opportunity is also taken to build a new house I will not ber convinced how real that change will turn out to be.

She is an MP – not one of those named so far by the Daily Telegraph – and she was so demoralised she was about to announce that she intended to stand down at the next election. It isn’t that she has anything to hide; on the contrary, she is one of the most decent, scrupulous, hardworking people I know. But like most MPs she is in despair, aware that she belongs to the most hated group of people in the country. Until now, I have not written a word on this subject. My partner is an MP, along with many of my friends. I did not want to become involved in arguments about who claimed what allowance, and that isn’t my intention now. If you really want (and need) experienced women with real families and real experience of home life in your parliament to represent YOU – what do you all suggest? If Toady this morning is to be believed, there are only about 4 troughing labour MP’s compared to the whole of the Tory (and not Conservative) party. Now, I know each party has their own share of troughers but this does seem a little unrealistic, even by BBC “standards”.
I made a comment about this three weeks ago saying the media would feast on the Labour expenses initially, then draw out the Tories scams much closer to the election, proportionally increasing the damage to the Tories election chances.

Agreed – Bromsgrove Conservative Association is a shadow of its former self. Ten years ago it was purged by CCHQ of its leadership, after false allegations of officer malpractice were alleged by Kirkbride and MacKay acting vicariously through the Party Board. The officers’ real crime was to hold their MP to account for her inadequacies. Many members just walked away in disgust. Others kept their counsel. Some stayed and fought. A few took the honourable course of political independence and remained in fine service to their community (almost all independents on Bromsgrove BC are ex-Tories driven out by Kirkbride). The association is now badly led, depleted and financially stretched. It needs a strong new chaiman who can steer it through these dangerous times. Perhaps Kirkbride will today reflect on the irony of the fact that she knifed all those who would have been strong enough to protect her this week. It’s OK to surround yourself with sheep but you are slighlty vulnerable when a wolf turns up.
