25 years ago I saw the future whilst driving in Czechoslovakia.

First a column of soviet tanks. Poor cars, poor roads, poor people queuing at a butcher shop. In fact MOST food shops and dilapidated houses.
Our cars were pored over at every stop. They'd never seen such new cars close up and right hand drive was a wonderment.
we could only manage 30mph at best on the supposed A class main road because of slow, overladen falling to bits lorries, very old cars, horses and carts and "no overtaking" signs for miles. Then WHOOSH we WERE overtaken at great speed by an obvious Government car which was an absolute top of the range BMW and clearly not subject to the rules because the occupant was clearly "too important"
We may not yet be quite as bad as that was but we definitely have a new "class system". Politicians should reflect and look at what happened after 1989 in the eastern bloc countries, including Romania, when the politicians and the system finally pissed off the citizenry. I for one am now somewhat pissed off and from what I see about 75% are

“it is right that those that earn more should pay more” as Gordon Brown said. Pity the law makers in Parliament aren't! As for limosines ... I used to be an MD with a very comfortable car, but why should I pay tax on something that was expected in my position? A bit like Government cars ... but they aren't taxed as yet or will they be in future ?

I gave up the job and the car and now travel by second class rail.

I had thought of taking up Cameron's challenge (but only if I can have a Ministerial jet like the rest) to grasp the gauntlet and make a difference as careful business people with no axe to grind and with morality would be good for the UK. Unfortunately, I am Scottish and ex-public school as well and so am I tarnished unfairly with same brush as our current rotten Parliament. At times I am ashamed of my fellow Scots ... Brown, Blair, Darling et al.

Guido ... I chanced upon your website some 2 months ago ... and I've been on here reading comments twice per day ever since. It is so refreshing to see that so many people care. From now until the next election we must force the politicians to concede electoral reform or we will all suffer the same again.

PR - no no no. We'd end up like Italy!
The current system DOES need change though because First past the post so frequently means that the winner actually has less than 50% of votes.Labour currently rule with the approval of only 26% of the electorate (maybe even votes cast) so there's democracy for you
I'd favour Single Transferrable vote with the first past 50% being the winner.

Hey don't know where YOU live but the benefits claimants in MY village ALL have Sky AND plasma TVs and new furniture and spend on booze like it's going out of fashion (soon will be!). I know because I see it in the village shop. They don't spend £1 on a lottery ticket but they DO spend a fiver on scratchcards a couple of times a week. Maybe in conurbations this is all more difficult to spot.
Some even manage to run fairly new cars - NOT mobility cars. But then they have free housing and Council tax and benefits for dependant kids whose fathers are un-named so don't contribute and working tax credits and child tax credits. Beats working!. If only I hadn't saved!
Sour grapes?
Sure but the number of claimants, compared to the size of the village, is rather high! Many have NEVER worked and likely never will. Appalling though the current political troughing is it pales into insignificance against the total claims for "incapacity" and other benefits +++ all the "cash in hand" black economy work. (I EXCLUDE here those who want to work but have lost their jobs) .

MOST taxes are theft!
My Local Council just told me that from now on I will have to pay £20 a year to have my garden waste collected 18 times a year. Their reasoning appears to be that SOME council taxpayers do not have gardens so it is unfair for them to pay for those who do.
GOOD thinking. Now then, I no longer have kids so have no need for education services which account for almost 80% of the Council Tax. So I am confidently looking forward to an 80% reduction in my Council tax! LOL
