He has brought the name of Cowley, head of CI5, into disrepute, and I hate that.

Don’t think Purdey will be impressed either. She hangs out with some fearsome types nowadays.

      Mark, Disgusted of Broadbottom says:

James Purnell is another who needs to consider his position as well.

I had a letter published in the Tameside Advertiser, Purnell’s local paper today in the following terms:

‘Last week’s Advertiser contained an article on James Purnell, in which he vigorously defended the expenses he had personally claimed.

Mr Purnell expressed regret the current expenses system had brought MP’s integrity into question. However, it’s not the system (which MP’s devised) at fault – it’s the way individual MP’s have abused the rules, sometimes spectacularly, and it is this that has sparked feelings of anger towards MP’s from the law-abiding majority, in a way not seen in living memory.

In Mr Purnell’s case, he has claimed in excess of £100,000 tax free in housing allowances over the past 5 years against property in London. This is on the basis that his constituency home in Broadbottom is his main residence. However, is this claim really justified?

House of Commons guidelines state an MP’s main home is generally the place where he spends the majority of his time, that is, 183 days/nights or more each year. Has Mr Purnell spent anything like 183 nights at his constituency house in the last 12 months, in the sense he actually slept on the premises overnight? If not, the claim the constituency house is his main residence fails, and his claim for the £20,000+ a year allowance becomes invalid.

I suspect only Mr Purnell and his neighbours know the answer to that particular conundrum’.

I followed this up tonight by speaking to Purnell’s next door and next door but one neighbour. They both say he is hardly ever there; once a month would be rather generous. I will speak to his other next door neighbour tomorrow and post up further details as soon as I have them.

The Telegraph were around about 3 weeks ago apparently – as they didn’t ask how often he stopped there the information did not come out!

But prima facie, there is a case for Purnell to answer.

Any suggestions (polite ones only please) as to how this should be taken forward?

(My name and address are in the paper if anyone wishes to check the authenticity of this out – the online version of this is at:

      http://www.tamesideadvertiser.co.uk/news/c/1115030_mp_urgent_need_to_reform_expenses

I am ‘Disgusted of Broadbottom’ in the online edition, in which there is an extra final sentence, which the paper edited out).

        Sam says:

Leah that is disgraceful. A disabled friend of mine who had to borrow for a new cooker had to pay the loan back weekly from her job-seeker’s allowance – which is a pittance. the paperwork & postaage associated iwth this loan and repyament must have cost a fortune – weekly 3-oage notifications etc etc!

When I was young and settign up my flat as a student, the poor and those on benefits could go along to a Council site and get a 2nd hand cooker or fridge which had been re-condtioned. Now it’s agaisnt the law or at least impossible to buy any electrical goods whatever 2nd hand due to the Elf- even a lamp, hairdryer or iron, much less a fridge or washing machine etc. What a ridiculous policy – if you go to your council dump any day, there are people driving in and chucking away skiploads of perfectly good stuff, inc TVs and computers. It makes me mad as hell!

I cannot imagine that ZanuLabour luvvie Crick could give any one of the leftish mafiosi a hard time.

Tonight the Conservative attempt to freeze the BBC’s Evil Empire Licence Fee has been lost this evening. Quelle supris. Once again Lib Dems & Labour MPs have given millions of us more good reasons not to trust them or vote for them in any election in the future.

Neither party gives tuppence for the feelings of the electorate who are paying an unfair tax to promote a one dimensional ideology.

And when they claim they are voting to retain the so-called “independence” of the Evil Empire – we know they are guaranteeing themselves the full and unconditional support of the Evil Empire come election time.

It is our duty to support the Conservative Cultural & Media Shadow and give him every piece of ammo we have on the misuse of public money by the bigots at the Evil Empire.

Time to turn the spotlight on the money soaked BBC.

        Anonymouse says:

You think the BBC will be worse than our MPs at spending money? That’s rubbish.

For a start, I pay an awful lot more to the government in taxes than I pay to the Beeb, The beeb occasionally produce something of value with what I pay them (Not much it has to be said, but more than Broon ever has), and I very much doubt that the BBC expenses will include a mock tudor beamed floating duck pond in a recently cleaned moat…

Yes the BBC is left leaning, but that it a simple reflection of the majority of people who work in the media, who have very socialist ideas sometimes, believe me.

MPs are simply trying to shift the focus from themselves onto someone else.

    No, not this time says:

Rennard has gone. Emailed statement to all members (mailmerged, but I’ve de-merged it):

First, I’d like to thank all members for everything that you are doing to help our candidates in the European and local elections (if you have local elections in your area). I am sure that they appreciate your support at a difficult time in politics. If you are standing yourself, then obviously I wish you the best of luck!

My reason for writing is that I have decided to make the current election campaigns my last as Chief Executive. I discussed this with Nick some time ago and I have given notice to the Party President that I will stand down as Chief Executive at the end of the Summer.

I want to be able to work more flexibly in future whilst of course continuing to help our party advance. I believe that I will be better able to do so without the administrative burdens of being Chief Executive and running the party’s day to day organisation.

For family and health reasons, I have needed to change the way in which I work. My wife Ann has supported me enormously in all my work. But since she retired a few years ago after more than 35 years teaching, we wanted to have something of a more normal life outside the Westminster bubble.

This has become more important to me as I have struggled to maintain good diabetic control with the rigours of a very demanding lifestyle. This has proved to be increasingly difficult whilst carrying out the role of Chief Executive at HQ and around the country.

I decided that this Summer would be the best time for me and for the party to make a change. I am letting the party know this now, so that it can take the necessary steps to appoint a new Chief Executive in the Autumn.

My major work as Chief Executive in recent years has been to help create new structures for the party organisation and help to recruit an extremely strong professional team to work for it. The role of Chief Executive has therefore changed significantly since I undertook this role six years ago.

By the Summer, we will have had crucial local and European elections and I believe that we will do well in them. I am also confident that Nick Clegg will prove to be the most successful Leader that we have ever had. I am immensely proud of the roles that I have played so far in securing the steady advance of the Liberal Democrat cause. Our values and beliefs have never been more important than they are today. I will, of course, continue to support the General Election campaign, but not as chair.

Finally, I would just like to thank all members personally for all the support that I have had whilst working for the party and I look forward to continuing to work with you in future.

    With all best wishes,

    Yours sincerely
    Chris Rennard

PS I thought about letting you know this after the current round of elections, but having taken the decision and informed the Leader and President, I wanted you to hear directly from me and to fully understand why I have been trying to make lifestyle changes and will make an even more significant one later this year.

Guido chuckled at the following exchange he had with a Tory insider:

Tory: “What’s Labour’s position on the Syria crisis?”

GF: They say you should be talking to Russia.”

Tory: “Labour have been saying that since 1945.”

DisgustedOfMitcham2 says:

Maybe if they really wanted to “decontaminate the Labour brand” with business people, they shouldn’t have totally buggered up the economy?

Just a thought.
