Be careful what you wish for, Rupert. Charging for something is the quickest way to find out what it’s worth. Are free online newspapers visited because they are free or because they are super Galactic-quality journalism?

If Rupert charges for his stuff, he’ll certainly establish a dedicated “worth the money” readership, but if that turns out to be a few hundred people, what will he tell his advertisers?

As Dr feelgood says, some specialist journals can pull this off, but it’s not clear the Daily Comics can.

I pay for access to the FT and subscribe to the Economist – but these (like the WSJ) are specialist/premium titles and not pursuing the mass market.

Clearly the MSM need to make money somehow, but not sure basic subscriptions provide a sustainable business model either.

Bias is bias, lies are lies..If you start from the premise that you will show allegiance to a particular political party over truth then your audience will continue to turn elsewhere for the truth. You can put your master’s words, in the case of the Sun and Times (Rupert Murdoch), on paper and on-line but, if it doesn’t read like the truth and you flaunt your open support of a political party in the publics’ face then they will stop reading your lies.
As newspaper barons go Rupert is not the worst at least he is up front; we support New Labour (or did until they wrecked the Country), what to make of the Telegraph who pretend to be one thing and then as subtly as a brick through a window have been supporting New Labour all along. What peaks they have climbed in search of truth; well if you say so Mr McBride we will print it, you are sure this will get us first on the list for your next smear (sorry scoop).
The moral is, if you wish anything resembling the truth visit as many Blogs as you can.
