American News

Clarke PetersAmerican actor Clarke Peters (Mandela, The Wire) was on Adam Boulton’s Sky show this morning.  He cracked a joke that would have had Sunny Hundal putting Guido up on a thought-crime charge if it was first cracked here on the blog:

“People used to say ‘pigs would fly’ if we had a black president. Well 100 days into Obama’s presidency, swine flu.”

Jack Kemp R.I.P.On a sadder note, Jack Kemp has died after battling cancer.   Guido wonders how different the world might have been if  the former NFL quarterback had been the vice-presidential running mate of Bush senior instead of Dan Quayle.  If  the libertarian-conservative Kemp had then succeeded the original President Bush, we might never have had Presidents Clinton or Dubya.  Instead after nine terms as a Congressman for Western New York, from 1971 to 1989, he served as Housing Secretary in the George H. W. Bush administration.

Kemp an advocate of low tax, supply-side policies was until recently still active in the Washington think tank world.  He was conservative on abortion and libertarian on immigration,  with Chicago school economic ideals.  His crucial contribution to the Reagan agenda was as architect of the Economic Recovery Tax Act of 1981, possibly the greatest tax reduction in American history since the Boston Tea party. The world sorely needs more Jack Kemps.

Libertarian in all the right ways and not the wrong ones as far as you’re concerned, then. God, I’m sick of these half-arses littering the internet who thinks libertarian means ‘everything the way I want it.’ Break a few stories already, you’re getting tedious.

No, we need to be more libertarian on immigration: rather than the present “nothing to offer? Come on in, here’s your first welfare handout, that’s your taxpayer-provided home”, we should switch to “Come on in – provided you obey the law and provide for yourself without burdening the taxpayer at all”.

I’ve seen intelligent, well-qualified people with job offers here refused visas on the basis that “the country’s full” – while at the same time, the same government department was welcoming illegals whose English was limited to “soft touch” with open arms and open chequebooks. Digusting, and precisely the opposite of the policy we should have!

The country certainly is not full. I work in financial consultancy, pretty much half the company is staffed by first or second generation immigrants, and the same is true for many of our competitors and associated companies. A libertarian position on immigration is key to guaranteeing the success of our industry and economy in the future.

        Nick F. says:

That reeks of the Samizdata.net view of libertarian, i.e. the USA stance of the right-wing nutjob who will put up with anything so long as they can 1) have as many guns as they like, 2) don’t have to pay any taxes 3) get to post gratuitous pictures of overweight eastern Europeans who just happen to share their views on “libertarianism”. Small wonder that a certain blogger decided to split away from that view some time ago …

If you want to solve this country’s woes on immigration start by allowing the people in who can really make a difference. By opening the ports up yes you sure as hell are going to get the dross but you will also get a lot, probably a majority, of migrants who are extemely hard-working, do not want state hand-outs and, regrettably unlike a lot of British workers, can get the job done.

In my many years I have tended to find that real libertarians are the ones who genuinely believe in freedom for all (the “don’t step on me” types), not the modern US view that only the rich peoplem, like the despicable Kim du Twat, who have lots of guns can be libertarians.

Too bloody right. I don’t give a toss about immigrants as long as the costs are kept at a reasonable %. It’s bloody obvious we get health, housing, security, welfar & education tourism and yet there are no possibilities to examine rigourously their financial situation. The assumption that they’re all on their uppers seems unlikely to hold true. I think there should be A&E triage but costs applied to individuals who have been residents for less than 2 years perhaps – some kind of surcharge. I dunno – I think i’m wibbling now – sorry.

I think you’re being a bit short sighted 68 on drawing on the race card as Anon 82 calls it; you could equally argue Guido was railing against the ability of some to make a jibe or line that another cannot on the basis of what they look like which is inherently more racist, surely?

There is so much hypersensitivity to racism, sexism and isms in general – it just makes us neurotic as a whole, and does nothing to really improve things. It should not be an invitation for others to attack individuals who see how stupid the War on Racism is.

So give over. The only way to attain a fair minded and intelligent society is to just act like one, taking responsibility for ourselves as individuals, rather than this sterile mode of speech forced on us in the name of political correctness.

Watch out for Bobby Jindal ( governor of Louisiana).

I saw him last summer and it was refreshing to see a politician talk about less government and lower govt spending without any sign of guilty conscience.

Bobby Jindal is rightly feared by the godless communists as he has the personal power of good old fashioned no-nonsense Exorcism to back up his frighteningly powerful TV appearances. Such as his televised response to Obama’s speech at the Capitol which my American friends tell me was “jawdropping” and “unforgettable” It raised his profile throughout the land and made him a household name on every talk show apparently. Clearly a man to be reckoned with.

        @Half-eyed Scottish Idiot

In Louisiana, a monkey would be popular if it had the letter R after its name.

Also you need to check your facts, amigo. When Jindal first stood for the Louisiana governorship on a Republican ticket, most Republican voters stayed home. At the time this was attributed to soft racism – the simple unwillingness of southern white GOP-voters to support a dark-skinned candidate. Now it’s generally accepted that he was simply a weak candidate who did nothing to energise the local Republican base. His current “popularity” in Louisiana is purely comparative – he is popular by comparison with his incompetent Democratic rivals. He is effective by comparison with his incompetent Democratic rivals. He is good at his job by comparison with his incompetent Democratic rivals.

In an absolute sense, however, he’s a cretin and not fit to lick the boots of true Republican giants like Jack Kemp.

      • 326

Jindal did an awful reply to the budget, whichever fool thought it was a good idea to put the ravages of Katrina on in the background needs a long country walk. The Republicans have no credible candidates left.

I doubt that HW Bush would have been saved by a better VP though, and those on losing tickets do not tend to get another chance. So there would still have been Clinton.

The GOP has lost its way badly. Instead of offering genuine solutions, it’s fallen back on token politics. It thinks the best way to counter Obama’s message is to offer a cut-price alternative with its own black and brown candidates.

The problem is that Obama, whether you like him or not, is an effective politician, a skilled speaker and is capable of spinning his narrative to suit the broad aspirations of the American electorate. Jindal and Steele, on the other hand, are pretty much incapable of anything more complex than walking and chewing gum at the same time.

And, lest we forget, Born-Again Bobby Jindal was involved in some very nasty business where he and his buddies beat the living shit out of a woman as part of an “exorcism”. If you want to appeal to broad swathes of the country, you really don’t want a fundamentalist ex-Hindu who believes that all of America’s problems are caused by demonic possession.

      Dr Nuts says:

      Various points -

My other half is one of the disabled – she has a pituitary adenoma, the drugs which are intended to help her have serious side-effects – euphemistically referred to as ‘Personality Changes’, Hyper-mania to others!

She’s received DLA for Manic-Depression for the past 4 years, at top rate due to the severity of the ‘personality changes’ leading to three 6-month section 7s. Due to Purnell’s policy the following has happened:
      1. She no longer gets the same DLA allowance, despite the severity of the symptoms getting worse – purely for political reasons, and there’s a core vote of spiteful little men who think that Adolf Hitler got it right with euthanasing the mentally ill. The Conservatives have raised as an issue – and are disgusted that the ill are being used as a voting issue (not to be confused with the lazy).
      2. With the Labour background policy of cutting Mental Health Costs – the local Mental Health Unit in my area has been closed. My help-line of psychiatrists and Community Mental Health Nurses have been slashed.
3 As I now work as the only Mental Health worker in my partners case – I get £44 a week, for a 24/7 job, replacing Psychiatrists, Mental Health Nurses, and a Community Mental Health care facility. As 1 of 800,000 carers, I can state catagoricially, those nasty neo-Nazi opinionated little men are the ones effectively getting the something for nothing.

While caring for my other half – I completed a PhD, I’m currently working on 4 research papers in: Robotic Programming, Psychology, Mathematics and Robotic Sensor development/Biological entity Physiology; I have a tonne of work to do. I don’t get research grants, as I can’t get work at a University – indeed when I graduated from my PhD, my department at University was mergered (closed) – as my other half suffers with seperation anxiety, which leads to a significant mania-depression cycle.

Nice to see that the mentally ill are refered to as workshy/all other kinds of abuse for illness that is beyond their control. Oh, and the medications to treat mental illness (hypermania) leads to fat mental ill patients – and this government has led on a hate campaign about the ‘fat’, so this section of the community are despised for both being mentally affected by an illness beyond their control and all but spat at for being overweight – lovely society that they live in!

Hitler come back: You’re not the villian for British small-minded voters!

        Bollocks to NuLabour says:

My brother lost his leg in a motorcycle accident 20 years ago, and suffered brain damage to boot. But under this government he must attend the doctors once every six months to prove that his leg hasn’t grown back – I’m not kidding!!

With the brain damage he forgets to attend and loses his benefit again and again – so much for caring Labour. They have introduced things that no other government would have dared to.

      • 89
        Dr Nuts says:

The issue has been hi-jacked for votes by Purnell, with the statement that the genuinely ill should be forced to work, and DLA which was supposed to help the most vulnerable/marginalised in the society was used as a guide to determine who could work – who couldn’t. Great sounds good – until the point was made that those recieving DLA reviews suddenly found that their entitlement was being deliberately cut to suit political ends.

My other half had her level of DLA cut, and as a ‘shut-up’, told that she’d get permanent DLA entitlement.

But another point is: I had a car crash – not my fault – I got rammed from behind at a pedestrian crossing. When I recieved a compensation payout – finally, the DSS took the entire Incapacity Benefits payments from the payout. This is for a genuine case – I don’t see that happening for the ‘skivvers’. This is the current state of affairs that’s happening, the genuinely ill/sick are being targetted, ‘cos they’re easier to attack.

These are the policies that are being packaged up by Labour to gain votes.

      • 94
Broow & woolas are shit bags says:

While not inflicted myself I do know that what you say is true. I know a diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic who has had her DLA stopped & been told she must seek work. I think your experience is all too common. Interesting point about drugs like olanzepine making people overweight and therefore the patient is frowned upon. Targets in the NHS has meant that teams such as crisis resolution home treatment teams have targets on freeing up hospital beds by shifting responsibility of 24 hour care on good people like yourself. We are now even seeing “gateway workers” employed in primary care to make sure the mentally ill can be diverted away from NHS resources.

My sister’s PCT will not pay for her prescriptions of Lyrica (c.£40/month) even though it has a license for her diagnosis. Generalised anxiety disorder and maintenance in bipolar disorder. Says a lot about the government’s attitude towards mental health.

        Dr Nuts says:

Well, I had stopped my car at the pedestrian crossing – on the way to work – and got rammed by a mid-size car into my small 3-door jobbie. Everything behind the centre-posts was damaged, the spare wheel was forced out of the arch, through the rear seats and bounced.

The car was forced (despite having both the foot-brake and hand-brake on) over the zebra crossing and about another car length further!

I think that scores as quite some impact! Anyway – didn’t do the back much good.

As for the other half’s issues.

I’m very anti-abortion, but since I can’t get pregnant, and it won’t ever happen to me, it’s none of my business how any individual woman chooses.

I’d be pissed off if I got a partner pregnant and she decided to have an abortion, but it’s not me that has to carry a child for 9 months and undergo the associated health risks.

So I’m pro-choice in practice, but pro-life in principle.

If that’s contradictory, then so what – I’m just an ordinary bloke, not a politician. If I was a politician, I’d have to reconcile the argument on the grounds of choice and liberty, no matter what my own views are.

        Guinevere says:

world population 7.5 billion and rising

in those countries where there is choice (and there are very large portions of the world where there is none), there are enough children being born who are wanted, or at least tolerated not to need the ones who are not.

If you want to make contraception mandatory, you have to make it work 100% of the time, you have to manage rape as if it were actually a crime, not a problem only if you’re caught, you have to allow for human error.

if you’re a man, you have no say in this. If you’re a woman, you have the right to decide. You don’t have the right to enforce your decisions on anyone else.

Surprised? For many years it was quite common in London for Labour Party councillors and apparatchiks to corruptly wangle their way into housing association properties as the associations themselves were usually run by their mates. ‘Decent’ council housing was not immune for this practice either.

Social housing is a con, another means of ensuring that the people are dependent on the state. The issue is ensuring a free market in ‘cheap’ affordable housing. Unfortunately Brown’s debt driven house price bubble made sure that many ordinary families cannot afford to buy a home out of ordinary-level earnings.

    On the contrary, Hazel.

The last few weeks have been brilliant for letting the public see the true face of Brown’s regime.

The message of authoritarian control, stifling of freedom, class war, attacks upon success, feather bedding the public sector elite and the air of unreality about government borrowings and costs have all come across so well.”

Harriet Harman to fight for leadership if Gordon Brown is forced out.

Harriet Harman, Labour’s deputy leader, would block the coronation of a unity candidate and fight for the leadership of the party should backbenchers attempt to force Gordon Brown from office before the next General Election, The Daily Telegraph has learnt.

(excellent news, she aint gonna let anyone just waltz in, knew it would happen, the “its my turn” brigade will tear the party to shreds)

However, friends have told The Daily Telegraph that Miss Harman will not stand aside in favour of a rival considered more appealing to voters. She believes she has as much chance as anyone of winning a leadership contest – particularly given her proven track record in party elections.

Her refusal to be pushed aside means that if Mr Brown does stand down or is forced from office, Labour would face a potentially bruising and lengthy leadership contest in the run-up to the general election, which must take place in just over a year’s time.

Most MPs agree that such a battle would be electoral suicide at a time when the public expects the Government to focus fully on tackling the recession.

funny old time , if gordon had put a general election forward he would have solved his and the parties problem , cant really argue much with letting the voter decide , he could get off scottfree and dissappear into farming or ruining other countries finaces .

its just weird , we know that debt is going up and unemployment , but cant see many problems , except pets being rescued as they cant afford to keep them has gone up.

i just keep wondering post june 4th how labour will decompose , cant see how he solves it now , if hes hoping local elections will be a sort of blood letting and he can say hes taking labour on new course , that is just risky , imagine if economy tanks in unexpected ways , voters will never forgive labour , food deflation looks a bit artificial , petrol at £1 litre . hes borrowed enough to create an illusion , but if growth stats are unfounded borrowing will just get sucked up into problem .

does anyone in labour honestly think they are going to be in a better voter position by may 2010 ???

    • 396
      Krupp Fuckers says:

Old time funny, indeed. The problem is for Gordon to solve the election and this would let the voter decide to argue. He could free the scot, farm-out disappearance and finance other countries’ ruin.

Weird it is just – unemployment is upping the debt, problems many can’t see, as affording pets going up can’t be rescued.

I decompose how to rescue wondering about Labour, and solving can’t see he how: letting local blood at election is a hope for a new course – risky that is: imagine tanks in the economy: Labour will never forgive the voters, and artificial food will be deflated, litres at petrol pounds, an illusion has been borrowed to create an enough -

stats will unfound borrowing and just suck up the problem.

In May 2010 does any voter think Labour will be in a position better?
