His refusal to admit reality, making excuses for everything that goes wrong so that nothing is his fault; mindlessly and endlessly repeating the same invalid excuses over and over again; these are all classic signs of most mental illnesses at the pre-treatment/pre-diagnosis stage.

There’s a big difference between trying to spin your way out of trouble to avoid political fall-out, and lying constantly to everyone to avoid admitting reality to yourself and others.

He’s not just trying to avoid political fall-out from fuck-ups he’s made, he’s actively and constantly refusing to admit any aspect of reality.

He needs a proper diagnosis and treatment, and should most definitely not hold a job which has authority before that process gets a fair way along. At his age it’s going to take a long time to undo what his own thought-processes have been reaffirming to himself over the years.

It’s a complex situation, but I think it’s a combination of 2 things:
1) Sociopathic character
(unable to put himself into anybody else’s situation; no empathy; he can’t do anything much about this; it’s just how he is)
2) Refusal to accept reality
Constantly re-affirming his own lies to hide reality from himself and others which reinforces itself over years in his own mind. He can do something about this, but given his character it’s unlikely to ever be truly undone.
