Tell Gordon to “Just Go”

ResignFor those who missed this on Friday evening, here is a reminder.  There is a petition on the PM’s official website calling for him to resign.

It was in the hundreds when Guido first highlighted it, it got into the thousands over the weekend.  This morning it is above ten thousand.

When people start emailing it around offices it will climb into the tens of thousands.  Be patient, the Downing Street database server got overloaded over the weekend and petitioners had to try more than once to register their support.

Tell him to “Just Go!”

Don’t see a follow up piece (yet).
This is heading into unchartered constitutional waters, as much as it undermines parliamentary democracy, I am hoping PMQ’s throws up constructive questioning to help it on its way: Who runs the oversite and how many – Public/Private? What size does the government consider a significant petiton? Can civil servants sign governement petitions from workstations? What was the nature of the annomoly over the weekend of falling numbers? What are grounds for a signatories deletion, are the grounds stricter on this petition?
Are a few that spring to my mind, bound to be others.
Just passed 20,000, will overtake Bletchley Park for a place on the front page in half an hour. An important site, hope something can be done.

They have to compensate for the standard Labour voting system. This is the digital equivalent of having someone open up a ballot box and rummage inside for the non-favourable votes, throw them away and then blame everyone else for the reason why the box was tampered with in the first place.

Also it probably doesn’t help when half the people posting their petition call themselves “Damian McBride”, “Derek Draper”, “Tony Blair” or even “Guido Fawkes”.

  15. 18

This needs a big push – as I’ve pointed out there’s a long way to go before the number of signatures will make anyone take notice: there’s nearly three times as many signatures on a petition about the lifeboat-men’s radio frequencies, for f*cks sake.

    • 27
I doing a great job - Gordon says:

And you think Gordon gives a “flying fuck” about the lifeboat men ? But he’ll be pissed off in private about this despite his public pronouncements to the contrary and given the sort of man he is – he cannot conceive why anyone would want him to resign when in his opinion he’s the only man suited to lead the country out of the present mess – which as we know “started in America!” not here and in no way is he responsible in any shape or form for the past 12 years and he’s also doing a great job too in his opinion! AND finally everything is fixed -he’s said so in Parliament – put initiatives in place(it’s not his fault if the majority of applicants don’t meet the criteria is it ? or if there’s not enough money for funding the schemes ?)Ungrateful wretches – “M..m…m…m.m mr Speaker I will take NO lectures from the electorate !”

    • 32
      Road_Hog says:

Erm, that’s actually an important petition. The RNLI (this would also effect other marine charities) was being asked for £260,000 a year for a licences to continue using their VHF radio.

The RNLI is run on charitable donations (it should actually be covered by the government) and cannot afford to be paying the government this sort of money. It was another one of McSnot’s back door stealth taxes.

      • 44

Road_Hog: I’m a sailor myself, and I know how important it is – I signed it already.

The point I’m making is that we shouldn’t all be patting ourselves on the back and giggling about how clever we’ve all been just yet. We should be spamming our contact lists for more sigs.

At the moment the F*ck off Gordon petition is moving up into 12th position – it needs to be at #1 by a substantial margin before it gets any traction in the “real” world.

      • 63
        pp says:

RNLI should *not* be run by the government – it is a fine example of how government isn’t needed to run every last fucking thing in the country.

Fuck the public sector – if they aren’t needed for lifeboats then they aren’t needed for 90% of the other things they find to waste our money on.

The public are perfectly capable of making their own spending decisions.

      • 115
        Sarah says:

The life boats are staffed by volunteers, none of whom are paid a penny. They risk their lives in appalling circumstances to save those in distress at sea. They are heroes whose sea boots Gordon Brown is not fit to kiss.

They save the government a fortune too.
But that’s Labour for you. Do good deeds and raise your own money, and the heinous Hoon will come knocking on the door to extort some cash for his cronies.

Even given the vast amount of things to get angry about regularly provided by Labour, the lifeboat thing makes me fucking apoplectic.

      • 275

As a lifeboatman myself can I just second the view that the very last thing we want is to have the government involved in running or financing our organisation. You can imagine it now, half the number of boats for ten times the cost and all in the name of efficiency.

We would, however, like the governement to stop taxing us!

I think this petition is likely to get top billing on the Beeb at 10 o’clock because (excited voiceover) it is looking like there is at least one other person in the country who wants McBroon to “Carry On as PM”. Splendid.

I have been monitoring the petition site, and it’s update rate is odd. When I saw this steady peak increase of about 300 every update per session. I immediately thought that this system is slugged, or had McDoom got popular all of a sudden. Anyway, would McGrim ever allow a system, that could potentially be used against him, be allowed to operate without a safeguard being put in place. This is the party of fraudulent postal votes. In other words do you think there is any chance that Gordo would allow an HONEST system to be established.

  67. 154
    Blake's7 says:

This is just a bit wierd. I know it has been mentioned above that the numbers are going up in batches. I am fairly literate with IT, I can say that I have never seen a system do this, unless it is timing the server out, however if this were to happen we loose connection to the server and get a database error or page not found screen. Because the number when refreshed is going up in consistant blocks, you can make the bellow assumptions as to why this trend is occuring :-

    1. That the number of votes is not linked to the live database and it is updated by a macro that gets the data from a query (this would explain the number going down if the records are being deleted from the live database but only being published after the last macro).

    2. That the number of votes is not linked to the live database and is being veted by a human which are then posted when they have been sifted through
or veted then the figure updated manually, this is just unworkable as you would have to have teams in 24 hours a day. HYS is an example of this

    3. That there are data integrity filters inplace to make sure that data is not just rubbish (e-mail address, names etc), this however would normally reject the entry and tell you to correct the field that has been rejected. Also a computer would work through the requests logically and either reject or pass the entry and thus the number would go up at the rate with wich the server processes the entries.

Which ever of those reasons it is (and I more likely to sway with 1) I would suggest that the total number is not being updated in realtime and there is a mechanism in the middle of it. Why would you do this unless you have something to hide or are worried by a result? Obviously complete speculation.

    Just a thought.

    • 156
      youknowyouloveit says:

Looking at it, the updated happen on the half hour.

    • 159
      TheLaughingHomeSecretary says:

Its called caching. A periodic “snapshot” is taken of the page as it would appear from a sample direct database query, and that is served to the masses. That snapshot is very “computationally inexpensive” and it does not use direct database hits – its done to serve “good enough” results to very large numbers of viewers, numbers which would otherwise overload the database. Meanwhile, the real database is actually being updated all the time and you only see the numbers change when the next auto-snapshot is updated.

I have a more important consideration though: Did Broon switch to Dominoes recently after they aparantly began adding his favourite ingredient to their pizzas?

      • 160
        Blake's7 says:

And the favourite ingredient is? Piss, shit?

I have just been testing the timing of the total number refresh and it happens on the hour and half hour, so that confirms what you and I have said, that it is done by a query that runs every half hour. Lets just hope the data cannot be tampered with like the ballot boxes eh

      • 162
        TheLaughingHomeSecretary says:

Oh its doesn’t prevent fiddling, its just explains this effect which is common practice for many public db driven websites.

    • 171
      Steve says:

I think you’re right there Blake’s. Looking at the source of the page (which you can do from any web browser), the number of votes is a text field on the page, rather than a query from the database, which is what I would expect if it were ‘live’

The obvious reason for this is to reduce the load on the database server so that every page load is not running a query on the DB itself, there is a single query run in the background every half an hour which updates the text field on the page.

There are also human moderators going through the votes and removing obvioulsy ficticious entries (Jacqui Smith, Ed Balls etc). I would take a guess that they delete a load of these then run their query manually, which is why the number of votes ocasionally goes down.

A bit of a wierd way to run a database on a website (I do this for a living) but it allows them to have a crappy DB server rather than a whole farm of them, so I guess they’re doing it to save (our) money!

If a petition has already been signed in the in the past, you will not
receive another confirmation email. Signers should check first to see
whether their name already appears on a petition before trying to
register for it. You can do this by pressing “Ctrl & F” together and
entering the name they used to register.

Signers are also advised to regularly check there spam folders.

There were more than 10000 signatures against the one-eyed Scottish idiot [(c) J Clarkson] on Monday alone so it should be top of the pile by this evening. Fingers crossed, all we need now is some decent MSM coverage, then maybe, just maybe…..

The comparison against how many people voted for Brown at the last general election is logically and statistically invalid.

For example, his constituency might have only had, say, 100,000 people in it, whereas there might be 60million people who can vote on the petition, so it’s not comparing like with like.

His “election” to become leader was invalid because he bullied all the other potential candidates to stand-down so that wasn’t an election at all, it was just a coup.

There is no like-with-like comparison that can be made, because Brown was never elected by the same people (either directly or through their elected representatives) that can vote on the petition.

If you want to compare like with like, then compare how many people voted for him to become leader in a valid democratic election process (directly or through their elected representatives), which is zero, with the number of people who have voted on the resign petition.

More people voted for him to resign than voted for him to become leader as soon as the first signature appeared on the resign petition.

The 24,000 milestone is irrelevant; the milestone needed to pass was in fact zero.

“One of your ministers has been exposed for misleading Parliament”.

Would anyone care to make a list of nu-labour ministers that “haven’t” misled Parliament? It shouldn’t take long.

This petition is a bit weird now. It was flying until very late last night, since then it seems to have slowed to a crawl. Under regular circumstances I would have said that was normal, BUT, it was only really last night it started appearing in the online press. I would have expected this to be going somewhat faster than this.

3000 petitions in 16 hours? It’s going slower than it was at the weekend.

then it started going down a bit
