Grand National Tip

Guido got a call yesterday from the Spectator -

Speccie : Who are you tipping for the Grand National?

Guido : No idea, when is it?

Speccie : An Irishman who knows nothing about horses?

Guido : I know one thing, don’t take any tips from Peter Oborne.

On the basis of Peter’s tips Guido would consider laying (betting against) Brooklyn Brownie and Golden Flight on Betfair.  Oborne has finally got the full measure of Gordon Brown.  His demolition of Gordon’s G20 boasts is fantastic; Hubris, hoopla and claims that were false, cynical and very, very dangerous.

Hard to believe that Oborne was once Brown’s last commentariat fan.

    Gobshyte says:

Yes, but given the infantile electorate in once thoughtful, considerate, but stuffy Britain, who would bet against Labour taking a 20-50 seat majority at the next election?

How many of the simpletons out there who now depend upon the state for hand-outs or non jobs would vote against the staus quo?

Get used to Brown, he’s here for the long term.

I work in local government. I won’t be voting Labour, and quite a lot of my colleagues won’t either. If the Tories get in and run a new broom through the place that’s fine by me. Might I sugges they make a start with the Diversity Officers and similar no marks?

        Plato says:

Yup – and anyone involved in ‘efficency savings’. These aren’t – they are spurious ways of dressing up supposed cost reductions that are entirely subjective and funnily enough always acheive the target ‘reductions’.

And it’s all bollocks. It’s still the same or usually more money being spent on form filling, box-ticking and arse-covering.

@Gordon the McMentalist who said to Kidney Bingoes:

“How about as a complete taxpayer money scrounging Hoon that you just resign from your position and get a real job in the real world, eh?”

A ‘proper job’ like a banker, a PR consultant, or one of those overpaid lawyer whores perhaps, you silly Hoon? Whatever happened to our ‘real’ economy, you know, the one that involves firms actually making something or growing stuff? Someone’s got to sweep the streets, collect the rubbish and turn the street lights and the point Kidney Bingoes is making is that increasingly the public sector is being filled out with highly paid non-jobs. And looking at the bank bailouts, legal aid fees, consultants fees and such like, crap private firms are firmly sucking at the tit of public money too. We have a troughing culture in this country across all sectors that needs to be addressed.

      • 396
        Gordon the McMentalist says:

Yeah of course. Nobody really needs people in the private sector to actually fucking EARN the money that pays for all you public sector scroungers, right? And wtf is wrong with working as a banker, trader, broker or even in Lloyds, since The City is about the only real area of productivity left in the UK given that you fucking Labour Hoon wankers have really destroyed just about every single other area of productivity in the UK anyway.

A pox upon all of your houses.

They thought, in general, that I was a genius. Which, of course, is correct. They were also very warm to my policies and plans, and like many people, completely taken in, - I mean by them.

But not now. Sense or reason seems to have deserted them, and they now not only criticise me, but dare to use argument, logic, and facts to back their case. Worse, they are quoting my record.

But I'm pretty that my G20 success, together with overwhelming international support, and that of Mzzz. HarPerson, will overcome these niggling problems, and The Speccy will again be firmly on my side.

Could David Cameron have delivered the G20 deal?

    Alastair Campbell thinks not. http://www.labourlist.org/alastair-campbell-could-cameron-have-delivered-g20

“Playing ‘what if?’ is not an exact science, but if Cameron’s isolationist and laissez-faire ideals had already secured power, it is doubtful he would have been able to organise a meeting like the one we’ve just had, let alone steer it to a decent conclusion.

In acting as he has in recent weeks, flying round the world, never off the phone, despatching officials left, right and centre to try to assess the best possible outcome and then work towards it, Gordon HAS been focussing on the British economy. Because without the global economy reviving, nor will ours.

Time to revive ‘no time for a novice.’ Because in this case, it is true. DC is no Obama. I’m beginning to wonder if he is even William Hague.”

I mean, it’s not as if Campbell is a partisan creature or anything, is it?

I would sincerely hope that Cameron wouldn’t have ‘delivered’ this G20 ‘deal’ because it is full of double accounting, re-announcements and pledges: typical Gordon Brownian bullshit, in other words.

“In acting as he has in recent weeks, flying round the world, never off the phone, despatching officials left, right and centre to try to assess the best possible outcome and then work towards it, Gordon HAS been focussing on the British economy. Because without the global economy reviving, nor will ours.”

        ————————————————————–
        http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/3437315.stm

Dr Kelly took his own life and no third party was involved

No-one involved could have contemplated that Dr Kelly would take his own life as a result of the pressures he felt

Dr Kelly was not an easy man to help or to whom to give advice

Can not be certain of factors that drove Dr Kelly to suicide

Dr Kelly probably killed himself because of extreme loss of self-esteem and would have seen himself as being publicly disgraced

Dr Kelly would have felt his job was at risk and that his life’s work could be undermined

    good post on pb.com…..

News coverage today shows that anger is growing over the latest spin operation by Brown/Mandelson/Campbell on what is really a G20 flop.

What a complete waste of time the G20 was.

When you read the fine-print you discover no concrete decisions or changes were made, just ‘pledges’ and warm words. The Brown $1.1 trillion dollar spending figure is actually a cut of $300 billion on the pre-G20 total of $1.4 trillion. And that was EXISTING fiscal stimulus (unfunded spending). The G20 actually cut promised spending, not increased it.

The Financial Times today agrees nearly all of the $1.1 trillion is existing spending, not new money. On this I would say the other 19 of G20 leaders have finally seen sense and distanced themselves from the Brown unlimited unfunded spending insanity.

What we have really seen in the UK over the last 2 days is a full-blown Mandelson/Alistair Campbell spin operation, in which a pack of lies has been peddled as truth. They boast of great achievement, ’saving the world’ and link this to a rise in the stock market.

Yet the stock market has been going up almost every day for 5 weeks since the US announced it would start printing money – so has oil, all the rises are inflationary, which indicates we will see a big rise in interest rates in the near future. That will simply deepen the recession. You can’t spend your way out of a recession, but you can spend your way into a deeper recession. This is why Keynes was utterly discredited in the post-war period, as every time Keynesian fiscal stimulus (unfunded spending) was tried it resulted in inflation, and a longer recession (hence stagflation).

Brown says you have to ‘do something’ because people are losing their jobs. Well, if you do the wrong things more people will lose their jobs, not fewer. Brown is doing the wrong things. When we put someone who has no real understanding of economics in charge of the crisis, the same person that caused it in the first place, we are guaranteeing turning a crisis into a disaster. He is throwing good money after bad. Spending your money on his failure.

Either inflation is allowed to run out-of-control like Zimababwe and we get total economic collapse and 6 million unemployed, or interest rates rise to combat inflation and we get 3 million unemployed. Both scenarious are caused by the decision to printing money and undertake massive unfunded spending.

Today we learnt from the Telegraph that Britain will need an IMF bailout, according to government ministers. Britain is bankrupt.

For weeks we have been distracted by a G20 spin operation from the serious and real problems facing Britain. It has been a dream-world fantasy for two days is which quack-of-the-hour Brown has pulled a fast one on the public.

Take today’s ‘Any Questions’ on the BBC. Never have I heard so much anger directed at a government for spin and deception, mainly over the G20 conference. Mike Smithson called it right. No one believes the spin. It has simply undermined those foolish enough to swallow it, and made Brown look like a devious manipulator. Read foriegn newspapers. No where is there much mention of anything new from the G20. It is just another conference occurring every other month somewhere in the world. Unlike Doha, in this one, no real decisions were made.

For example, arrogant boasts from Brown that there were no ‘disagreements’ at the G20 shows how pathetic he has become. There were no disagreements because Brown simply backed down on every one of his pre-conference porposals! He had no support and was utterly isolated!

The fine print shows not a single real decision was made. To arrogantly boast about such a flop shows that Brown needs to visit the doctor and get some medication. This is certainly the view of the public.

The G20 is unlikely to stop Brown from being ousted by his party this summer – their last chance to do so. If anything it will make it inevitable. Turkeys don’t vote for Christmas.

  26. 45

I’ve had a closer look at the so-called G20 Agreement and I’m far from impressed.

The fact is that nothing new came out of it, particularly no new money (except for a paltry $40b from China) It is clear now that the whole thing was just a massive con and a spin operation by Brown and Mandelson.

Those two conmen really are a disgrace to the Labour Party and the sooner we get rid of them the better for all of us.

“Welcoming world leaders to this summit, Gordon Brown looked every inch the happy host. He had good reason to be cheerful.

On Wednesday prime ministers and presidents walked up a red carpet to dine at his Downing Street table.

    Caught in the act
Personal data is posted on an activism website. A man is arrested under the Serious Crime Act – but his involvement was minimal
    Chris Williams
The Guardian, Thursday 2 April 2009
At about 7am on a Monday in February, police arrived at the Sheffield home of a man wanted in connection with the country’s largest animal rights extremism case. He was arrested, his home searched and computer equipment seized.

The man, an IT worker who can’t be named, is now on police bail on suspicion of offences under the Serious Crime Act 2007. But his case has prompted fears that authorities could use recently adopted and wide-ranging powers to prosecute people for the actions of others online.

He is not accused of threatening or harassing anyone, let alone animal rights terrorism. Instead, the man, in his 40s with a young family, is being investigated for minor involvement with a website that briefly allowed activists to publish the personal information of a senior high court judge in its forums.

The judge in question was Mr Justice Neil Butterfield. In January he handed down lengthy prison sentences to seven members of Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (Shac) after an investigation over several years by Kent police. The next day, an animal rights activist posted his personal information to the comments section of an article on Indymedia UK, a citizen journalism site frequented by protesters.”You might want to let this friend of [Huntingdon Life Sciences] know exactly what you think about him,” the commenter urged other Indymedia UK users. Incitement to harassment is an offence that has in the past landed animal rights activists in prison.

Administrators soon deleted the information in line with the site’s privacy policy. A second anonymous commenter reposted it that day, and it was again deleted.

Kent police contacted Indymedia UK the following day, asking for the IP addresses of the commenters, which would enable investigators to identify them via their ISPs’ customer records.

The vast majority of websites record IP logs. They provide commercial operations with valuable geographic and demographic data, and are often useful for security professionals battling denial of service or other attacks.

However, Indymedia UK, run on a shoestring by volunteers and with a strong interest in the anonymity of the activists who use it, does not store IP logs. Connecting to one of its servers means your IP address is briefly written to a RAM chip, but administrators have configured the Apache server software not to keep any long-term record on hard disk.

Kent police then seized an Indymedia UK server from UK Grid, a firm in Manchester providing “co-location” services – a spot in a data centre and a connection to the internet. The Sheffield man’s name was on the contract.

Kent police contacted him repeatedly by phone, demanding he disclose IP logs. After two weeks of being told the logs did not exist, officers travelled to Sheffield and launched their raid on 9 February.

The man was arrested under provisions of the Serious Crime Act that outlaw “intentionally encouraging or assisting an offence”, “encouraging or assisting an offence believing it will be committed” and “encouraging or assisting offences believing one or more will be committed”. Officers from Kent questioned the man for several hours with his lawyer present, before releasing him on bail to appear at a police station in May.

Friends of the man said the Indymedia UK server was one of several unrelated machines located at UK Grid under his name. He had been running them as a “hobby”, helping NGOs and groups get online. He did not have administrator privileges for the site, they said, and has not been an animal rights activist. “He’s pretty stressed out by it all,” one said.

An Indymedia UK spokesman agreed the man had nothing to do with the website beyond the co-location contract. “We see the arrest as an attack on the website and on press freedom,” he said.

Anthony Burton, a senior partner at media and criminal law firm Simons Muirhead & Burton, said Kent police were breaking new ground using the act in this way. The relevant provisions only came into force on 1 October last year.

“It’s a new offence and I’m not aware of any case involving its use,” he said. “We’re on virgin territory. It will be for the Crown Prosecution Service to decide whether there’s a case to answer.

“A defence that may be available is that the man acted reasonably, but that would be for him to prove,” Burton said. The police were normally very cautious in their approach to cases involving freedom of speech issues, he said, but the involvement of a senior member of the judiciary had probably prompted them to act.

At the weekend, Kent police said the investigation of the man was ongoing.

Indymedia UK is no stranger to the attentions of law enforcement agencies. In 2004 it was knocked offline by a raid in London on behalf of the FBI, which was investigating violent protests at meetings of the G8. That downtime prompted activists to redesign the site’s infrastructure.

The seizure in Manchester had a negligible effect on Indymedia’s function as the server was just one of many “mirrors” internationally, all serving the same pages. Similar arrangements are used by the whistleblowing site Wikileaks and the P2P search engine The Pirate Bay, which both fear takedown by authorities.

    • 139

The internet isn’t outside the law you know. Freedom of speech is good but has its limits.

If you make threats against public servants, whether judges or Government ministers, or if you make libellous accusations or publish illegally leaked material, you can expect to be dealt with under normal security procedures. That’s the law. If you disagree, you can go to prison!

Do you deny that gay couples have the same rights as heterosexual couples? if not you are a BIGOT!

Their grandparents were clearly too old and their views (like yours) were out of date and it’s inappropriate for children to be brainwashed by their homophobic views. We don’t want the next generation to turn out homophobic like you.

Children need to be taught about tolerating LGBT people. Homophobic bullying is still a problem in schools, but as same-sex adoption becomes more commonplace, it will die out.

Sadly, much of the attacks on Harriet Harman and Jacqui Smith carry an undertone of misogyny.

      http://www.labourlist.org/joy-johnson-attacks-on-harriet-harman-misogyny,2009-03-10

“If it was only her policies that were discussed, and even condemned, then we can live with it but as always with Harriet and other women in political life it is accompanied by personal abuse. It’s so dreary and predictable: the commonest attack, Harriet Harperson, harking back as it does to 1980′s ‘loony left’ with its tired replacement of man with person is out of time! Or it’s a play on Harpy, in which case its a typical bit of misogyny.

Of course it is not restricted to Britain. When Hilary Clinton was campaigning to be Presidential nominee she was subjected to a barrage of abuse from the ‘iron my shirts’ heckle to the contemptible banner: “Life’s a bitch. Don’t vote for one”.”

“…perhaps a lasting legacy will be her continued support for the all-women short list, which began the change in the numbers of women elected to the House of Commons.”

I don’t support the Tories, but I don’t see how people can support Labour, a party that supports ID cards, a DNA database, detention without charge, ubiquitous CCTV, and an overall infringement of the public liberty. It supports an interventionalist foreign policy, empire building, policing the world, attacking countries that have done us no harm, waging war for oil and for the benefit of war profiteers, bankers and defence contractors, and our involvment in NATO a military alliance that sees our soldiers under foreign commanders and waging war for foreign interests. It supports an ever more dictatorial EU, responsible for the curtailment of the public voice in decions relating to international treaties that undermine our liberty and soverignty, an EU that infringes upon the freedom of our industry, and of the people in general, and undermines the capacity of the people for self government. Labour, despite claiming to be the party of the many and not the few, supports the wholesale transfer of wealth from the general population to a small cabal of international bankers, and the multinational corporations that enjoy the governments patronage. Labour supports the engourgement of a growing class of uselss government officials that eats out the public substence and leaves them destitute. In an ever increasing public defecit, it has established a public debt that has made current and future generations forever the debt slaves to the bankers, forever labouring to enrich the same banking interest they have been forced to accomodate at the public expense. Labour supports an evil and corrupt monetarty system that subjects the people to usuary on their own currency, that manipulates its purchasing power and concentrates economic power in a small and secretive association that profits from the devaluation of the national currency. It supports international monetary and economic organisations such as the IMF, WTO and World Bank that seek do undermine national sovereignty and see fit to conquer the people by their own system of credit and trade, whilst supporting a select group of multinational corporations who garner their favour.

Labour, in the few years they have been in government, have done more to undermine our liberty, sovereignty and prosperity than any foreign dictator could dare to imagine.

Iraq war Minister claimed expenses on one home, rented out second … and lived in third for free
    Geoff Hoon

The Cabinet Minister who sent Britain’s Armed Forces into the Iraq war claimed expenses on his constituency house and rented out his London home – while living throughout the conflict in a palatial grace-and-favour apartment in Whitehall. Former Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon – now Transport Secretary – lived rent-free for three-and-a-half years in Admiralty House, London. He earned money from the London house he had declared to the Commons authorities as his ‘main home’ by renting it out. And he claimed more than £70,000 in a ‘second-home allowance’ on his constituency home in Derby.

This Hoon business is all a storm in a teacup.

I actually think MPs aren’t paid enough. This is an unpopular thing to say at the moment, but GPs, dentists, headteachers, top police officers are all paid more. Are MPs paid enough, considering the important work they do as public servants in a democracy?

This would mean they don’t have to claim as much for expenses.

Most MPs could earn more if they were doing another job – running their own businesses, becoming headteachers, etc. Some Tories actually have second jobs to supplement their salaries – which isn’t a good idea either.

If we want the most talented, able young people to enter Parliament, we need to offer them competitive salaries. Surely attracting the best is best for a democracy.

What is the big deal about that excellent and principled politician Geoff Hoon having three homes? It’s all a storm in a teacup.

We will all be able to afford three homes in a few months time when Gordon Brown has been to the IMF and brought back billions of pounds to share out amongst us all.

The Tories would just force all those of us who owe money to start paying back our debts. You can’t run a modern economy like that. You have to keep borrowing and spending otherwise you go into recession then people will suffer.

At last, somebody else who understands modern economics.

We have to borrow from the IMF to keep the economy moving and prevent recession. We can print more money if and when we have to pay any of it back.

Borrow and spend is what is necessary now. Thank goodness Gordon Brown understands that.

      • 341

        312 and 319

Well said. There’s no stigma in going to the IMF for a handout anymore.

It’s like going to a spa for some rest and recuperation. Gordon knows what is best for this country and when he goes to the IMF we should support him and help to get the economy back on track by spending as much as we can.

Life after Westminster – what MPs do after leaving office

        25 October 2007

Life after Westminster – what MPs do after leaving office

“There’s nothing so ex- as an ex-MP”, it is often said.

In a major study, a team at the University of Leeds sought to find out whether this is true by asking more than 180 former MPs about aspects of their post-Parliamentary life including how difficult it is to find a job, the support they receive from their political party and how it feels to lose their seat.

The study found some former MPs struggled to find work and many earned less after leaving the House of Commons. Around half of those who did not retire voluntarily from the Commons said it had taken three to six months to find a new job. Just one fifth said they were able to find work immediately or almost immediately. One in seven took over a year to find employment.

The report provides important new evidence about the social and psychological effects and consequences of being defeated in an election or retiring from Parliament. Some 60% of respondents had retired voluntarily while 40% had been defeated at a general election. Two fifths said they were making less money than when in Parliament, with one fifth earning “about the same”. One third said they were financially better off after losing their seats or standing down.

So much is said of the money to be used to stimulate the global economy, but where did the $1.1 trillion come from? Naturally, the people are being coerced to bail out and subsidise the bankers, but that money to be utilised for the benefit of the general public is simply derived from the public purse. Having eviscerated the public of the wealth, only to return it to them bearing the interest of the public debt, the people are no better in standing, if not worse. The government has no wealth of its own, and so can only derive its revenue from the people. For the government to claim the stimulus packages will lead to our prosperity, they must also claim that they can allocate resources more effectively than the general public, which has been the argument of tyrants and dictators throughout the ages.
