There’s a sting in this tale, though. A chap’s liable to capital gains tax on his second (and subsequent) home(s). So if his ’second’ home is a Georgian townhouse in Islington, doubling in price every five minutes, while his ‘principal residence’ is a poxy Cornish barn with rising damp but ever-diminishing value, he will eventually get stung for a load of CGT on the house and will have to retire to the barn to lick his wounds. (Always assuming that peers haven’t declared themselves exempt.)

Oh, and on Woolas, ‘fraid he’s entitled to do that, whatever you think of the rules. He is MP for some godforsaken shithole up north, he has to be in London for the Commons. He can claim. What the Lords are doing is living in London but claiming some cheap hardly-converted barn in the sticks as their main residence and claiming for being in London. When they are anyway. At least people like Woolas have to be in their constituencies occasionally. Last time I looked, peers dis not have constituencies.

Sounds pretty standard behaviour for Labour: in 2004 Phil Woolas MP used £18,008 of his ‘additional cost allowance’ expenses to pay the interest on his mortgage.
