A few years ago, a friend of mine was taken ill on the train, and was helped by Alex Salmond. As my friend is an Englishman living in England, it was pure altruism on Mr Salmond’s part, since there were clearly no votes in it for his party. To that Englishman, the SNP leader is a Scottish gentleman.
